About this lesson

You'll explore the core characteristics of groups—shared identity, loyalty, common purpose and leadership—and discover the four main types: formal groups created by managers, informal groups that develop naturally, reference groups people aspire to join, and autonomous working groups. The video then moves into what makes a team different: a team is a specific type of group with express objectives, defined roles and clear accountability, using the analogy of a football team to illustrate these features. The second half examines the real strengths and weaknesses of team-based working so you can apply this knowledge practically. Strengths include better work organisation through coordinated effort and pooled skills, improved ideas generation from diverse perspectives, peer-driven control and discipline, and higher-quality decision making. However, teams also carry risks: conformity pressure, the Abilene paradox where people accept ideas nobody actually supports, risky shift when accountability is collective, and non-suitability for certain creative tasks. Additional challenges include slower decision-making, social perception concerns for team leaders, team norms that restrict individual flair, audience effects that undermine performance on new tasks, groupthink that prioritises harmony over objectives, and increased conflict from working closely with others. Understanding both the benefits and pitfalls prepares you to recognise team dynamics in your own work environment and contributes to your knowledge of organisational behaviour across CIMA and ACCA qualifications.
