About this lesson

This framework teaches you to match four distinct approaches (telling, selling, participating, and delegating) to different maturity levels, helping you motivate and develop people more effectively. Understanding situational leadership is essential for the Strategic Management module and real-world team leadership, where one-size-fits-all management rarely works. The model uses two key dimensions: task behaviour (how much direction you give) and relationship behaviour (how much support you provide). Low-readiness team members need high direction but low support through a telling approach. Moderately ready people who are willing but unable need both high direction and high support via selling. Those with ability but lacking motivation benefit from high support and low direction through participating. Finally, highly ready team members who are both willing and able need minimal involvement through delegating. By understanding how readiness, task behaviour, and relationship behaviour interact, you'll be able to diagnose situations quickly and choose the leadership style most likely to succeed.
