About this lesson

Understanding these distinctions is essential for Performance Management and Strategic Business Leader papers, where you'll need to recommend appropriate controls and information systems for different parts of the business. At operational level, the focus is on transactional data, workforce information, production schedules and customer details that support day-to-day efficiency. Controls here include segregation of duties, operating procedures and access controls. Moving up to tactical or management level, middle managers need marketing and sales data, competitor information, KPIs and budget data to plan and allocate resources effectively. Controls shift to budgetary controls, management reporting and risk assessment processes. At strategic level, the board requires market research, financial forecasts, competitor analysis and regulatory data to make long-term decisions. Strategic controls focus on the planning process, governance frameworks and financial reporting oversight. The volume of information forms a pyramid, with operational level requiring the most data and strategic level the least. Internal controls across all three levels serve a critical purpose: ensuring data accuracy and honesty, maintaining regulatory compliance, validating non-financial data like sustainability metrics, and enhancing governance and accountability. Effective controls at each level help the organisation manage risk and support reliable reporting — a key theme you'll encounter throughout your studies.
