About this lesson

You'll explore the VAIN framework (values, attitudes, norms, expectations) as a practical way to assess culture, and understand the key influences on it: national context, founders, history, structure, and leadership style. You'll discover the difference between transactional and transformational leadership, and how each affects cultural development. Transactional leaders align with existing culture, while transformational leaders actively inspire change—particularly important in dynamic business environments where growth and adaptation are priorities. The cultural web is introduced as your structured tool for analysing organisational culture in SBL case studies. It comprises six elements: power and relationships, myths and stories, control systems, structure, routines and rituals, and symbols and titles. These six areas inform the paradigm—the collective beliefs at the organisation's core. By gathering evidence across all six headings, you'll develop a comprehensive assessment of an organisation's culture. Finally, you'll learn why culture alignment with strategy is essential. Culture signals to employees what the organisation values, so it must support the strategic direction and purpose. If culture and strategy misalign, strategy cannot be achieved. This concept is critical for SBL case study analysis and real-world leadership practice.
