About this lesson

We'll explore the four main types of systems—transactional processing, decision support, executive information, and expert systems—and focus on the ones most relevant to your exams and practice. You'll discover how these systems feed planning, control, and decision-making across organisations. A critical concept we'll cover is data silos: information held in separate departments that isn't shared organisation-wide. You'll learn why this creates problems—wasted time consolidating data, poor quality information, and missed opportunities for integrated decision-making. We'll then look at how enterprise resource planning systems solve this by creating a single integrated database that connects every function, from finance and HR to production and procurement. You'll also explore how management accounting benefits from real-time access to reliable, consolidated information, and how this improves budget holders' ability to manage independently. Finally, we'll examine lean information systems—the principle of delivering the right information to the right people at the right time. You'll learn the 5S model (sort, simplify, sanitise, standardise, sustain) as a practical framework for eliminating waste from your information systems, and understand the seven categories of lean waste and how they apply to information management. By the end, you'll be able to explain these concepts clearly in exam scenarios, evaluate information systems critically, and understand why integrated, lean systems matter for effective management accounting.
