About this lesson
Variance Analysis isn't just about calculations—it's about recognising that decisions in one department ripple through to affect other areas, and that's crucial for exam success and real-world decision-making. You'll explore the key variances you'll encounter: material price and usage, labour rate and efficiency, and overhead expenditure. For each, you'll discover the most common reasons behind favourable and adverse results. For example, a favourable material price variance might come from unforeseen discounts or a new supplier, but if that supplier provides lower quality materials, you could face an adverse usage variance and labour efficiency problems downstream. The critical insight here is interconnection. A decision that looks good in isolation—cheaper materials, for instance—can create a cascade of negative effects elsewhere. You might waste more material, slow down your workforce, or even damage product quality and sales. This lesson trains you to think like a manager: weighing individual variances against their total business impact rather than treating them as separate problems. By the end, you'll be ready to answer exam questions that ask you to explain variances and their causes, and more importantly, to spot the hidden relationships between them. This skill transforms you from someone who calculates variances to someone who truly understands what they mean.
