Lesson 50 C3b

Joint and by-products

In this lesson, you'll learn how to allocate joint production costs across multiple products and handle by-products in your costing calculations. Joint products are two or more distinguishable outputs from a single production process that must share costs up to the split-off point.

About this lesson

You'll discover two key allocation methods: the physical unit method, which divides costs based on output volume or weight, and the net realisable value method, which allocates costs according to each product's sales value after further processing. We'll work through a practical example showing how to apportion £1.5 million in joint costs across products A and B, then calculate closing inventory values when further processing is required. By-products are a smaller but important consideration in joint production environments. These are low-value outputs produced alongside main products, such as sawdust from timber processing. You'll learn the two standard treatments: recognising by-product revenue as miscellaneous income separately, or reducing the main product's production costs by the by-product's sales revenue. This lesson equips you with the techniques needed to handle joint and by-product scenarios confidently in your Performance Management assessments and real-world costing situations.
