About this lesson

Understanding these distinctions is essential for papers like Performance Management and Advanced Performance Management, where you'll need to apply costing techniques to service environments. Services are defined by the acronym SHIP: simultaneous production and consumption, heterogeneous output, intangible nature, and perishable resources. Unlike manufacturing, where products can be made, stored, and inspected before sale, services are delivered in real time. This means you can't determine the cost after delivery and then set the price—you must estimate costs upfront. Each service is also unique (a car mechanic's tyre replacement differs from a clutch repair), making standardised costing more complex. Services can't be held in inventory, so unused capacity—like empty mechanic hours—is lost forever, presenting real challenges for profitability and resource planning. By grasping these characteristics, you'll understand why service costing requires different approaches and greater precision than manufacturing costing. This foundation prepares you to tackle composite cost units and more advanced costing methods in your studies.
