About this lesson

You'll learn how culture is shaped by factors like organisational age, size, ownership, and industry, and you'll study three influential frameworks: Schein's three-level model of culture (artefacts, espoused values, and basic assumptions), Handy's four cultural stereotypes (Zeus, Apollo, Dionysus, and Athena), and Hofstede's six cultural dimensions. These theories help you understand and analyse different workplace cultures, which regularly appear in exam questions. The second half of the lesson covers committees in detail. You'll discover why organisations create committees, the different types (ad hoc, standing, steering, executive, and management committees), and how to weigh their advantages against their disadvantages. Committees pool expertise and create shared responsibility, but they can also slow decision-making and blur accountability. Finally, you'll examine the critical roles of the chair and secretary—the chair ensures focused discussion and fair participation, while the secretary manages logistics, documentation, and follow-up. James Wright walks you through real exam-style questions to help you apply these concepts confidently under pressure.
