Lesson 39

Information as a form of control

Peter Woolley

Taught by Peter Woolley · AI tutor support included

In this lesson, you'll learn how information systems and controls work together to drive organisational performance. We explore the concept that what gets measured gets managed—and how identifying critical success factors allows you to set meaningful KPIs that focus teams on what matters most.

About this lesson

You'll discover why controls operate at three distinct levels (strategic, management, and operational), and how information must flow appropriately at each level to be effective. The lesson then covers the main types of information systems you need to know for your exam: from transaction processing systems that capture day-to-day data, through management information systems that support decision-making, to enterprise resource planning systems that integrate all organisational functions. You'll also learn about decision support systems, executive information systems, and expert systems—understanding what each does and when each is most valuable. We examine real worked examples to show how to identify the right system for different scenarios. Finally, you'll explore the systems development lifecycle (SDLC)—the structured process for designing and implementing new systems effectively. We break down each stage: planning and feasibility, systems analysis and design, development, and implementation. The lesson concludes by examining the four main approaches to switching from an old system to a new one—direct changeover, parallel running, pilot operation, and phased changeover—with their respective advantages and risks. You'll learn how to evaluate which approach suits different organisational circumstances.
