About this lesson
You'll learn how to identify control and classify investments (subsidiaries at 51% plus, associates at 20–50%), then work through the three core calculations: goodwill, noncontrolling interest, and group reserves. Each calculation is built step-by-step with clear principles: goodwill combines the cost of the controlling interest, fair value of the NCI at acquisition, and net assets acquired; noncontrolling interest rolls forward from acquisition through post-acquisition profits and impairment; group reserves capture all profits belonging to the group across parent, subsidiary, and associate holdings. The webinar walks through two realistic worked examples. The first involves a mid-year acquisition with fair value adjustments and depreciation timing—common exam complications. The second introduces an associate, showing how equity accounting differs from consolidation and how the same post-acquisition profit figures feed into multiple workings. You'll see exactly what goes on the statement of financial position and why timing, percentages, and impairment treatment matter. By the end, you'll understand when to apply proportionate versus fair value methods for NCI, how to handle time-apportioned depreciation, and why group cash flow statements deserve separate attention. This session equips you with the essential building blocks to tackle group accounting questions with confidence and accuracy.
