About this lesson
Using Megan's real-world examples, we explore the critical difference between fair value hedges (protecting assets you already own) and cash flow hedges (protecting future cash flows from price changes you haven't yet committed to). You'll see how to measure derivatives at fair value, recognise gains and losses in the right place—either immediately in profit and loss for fair value hedges, or deferred in reserves for cash flow hedges—and understand when and how to offset hedging gains against underlying asset losses. By working through the numerical examples with gold and coffee contracts, you'll master the double-entry bookkeeping and timing differences that examiners test, and understand why hedging strategies protect your financial position even when individual bets don't go your way.
