About this lesson
This video focuses on setting up the question, understanding what's being asked, and planning your approach before diving into calculations. You'll learn to break down a complex section A case into manageable parts. The question requires you to evaluate two takeover defence strategies (selling garden centres or enhancing director remuneration), then calculate the company's cost of capital before and after issuing new bonds, assess the impact on stakeholders, and discuss employee remuneration issues. Understanding the structure upfront—seven marks for strategy discussion, four marks for initial WACC calculation, seven marks for post-debt WACC with revised asset beta, nine marks for written analysis, and six marks for remuneration discussion—helps you allocate your time effectively during the exam. This setup video walks you through the exhibits and financial data provided, including current capital structure, government bond yields for calculating credit spreads, and the proposed investment in outdoor shops. You'll see how to identify the four key components needed for any cost of capital calculation: value of equity, value of debt, cost of equity (using CAPM), and cost of debt. The video also highlights the trickier elements ahead, such as calculating the market value of new bonds using spot yields and credit spreads, ungearing and regearing the equity beta to reflect the business mix change, and handling the written requirements that secure professional marks. By the end of this setup session, you'll have a clear plan for tackling each requirement, realistic time allocations for each part, and confidence in how the calculations connect to the written analysis that follows.
