About this lesson

You'll explore the crucial distinction between risk and uncertainty, discover six categories of risk that affect business decisions, and understand how risk management frameworks help stabilise returns for investors and protect shareholder wealth. The lesson begins by defining risk as the inconsistency of expected returns, where outcomes and probabilities are known, versus uncertainty, where neither can be reliably predicted. You'll see how these concepts apply directly to the three core financial decisions you'll make: investment choices, financing decisions, and dividend policy. Each carries different risk implications that affect company valuation and investor confidence. You'll then examine two key risk classifications. Speculative risk (two-way risk) involves potential gains or losses from price movements—like investing in stocks and bonds—which businesses deliberately take on to generate returns. Pure risk, by contrast, only offers downside potential, like business interruption or accidents, and is typically managed through insurance and strong internal controls. Finally, you'll distinguish between business risk, which stems from the industry a company operates in, and financial risk, which arises from how the business structures its capital and manages liquidity. Understanding these categories prepares you to identify, assess, and mitigate risks across investment and financing decisions—essential skills for P3 Risk Management and broader strategic financial management.
