About this lesson
This session walks you through the entire F3 syllabus, giving you a clear picture of what to expect before you dive into detailed study. The F3 exam is roughly 40% calculations and 60% discussion-based content. While formulas like the capital asset pricing model are provided, you'll need to memorise straightforward ones like return on capital employed. The key takeaway: don't get caught up only in the numbers. Deep conceptual understanding of the technical topics is what separates passing from struggling, especially for objective test questions that require discursive answers. F3 breaks into four syllabus areas. Financial policy (15% of the exam) covers business objectives and shareholder wealth maximisation. Long-term funding (25%) explores debt versus equity decisions. Financial risk (20%) includes hedging strategies for currency and interest rate exposure — a significant topic that was added in the 2019 syllabus update. Business valuations (40%) is the largest area, covering valuation theory, asset-based approaches, and cash flow calculations. This last area is particularly important for the Strategic Case Study, which draws heavily on F3 knowledge across all topics.
