About this lesson
This lesson covers the key mechanics you need for the Taxation paper: the three main VAT return periods (quarterly, monthly, and annual), the rules for calculating the tax point for goods and services, and how to establish the value of a supply for VAT purposes. Understanding these foundations is essential for correctly accounting for VAT transactions and meeting filing deadlines with HMRC. The tax point—the date a supply is accounted for in a VAT period—is determined by specific rules depending on whether you're dealing with goods or services. For goods, the basic tax point is delivery, collection, or when the goods are made available; for services, it's when the service is performed. However, if payment or an invoice is issued earlier than this basic tax point, that earlier date becomes the actual tax point instead. There's also a 14-day rule: if an invoice is issued within 14 days of the basic tax point, you can use the invoice date as the actual tax point. The value of the supply is typically the VAT-inclusive amount, though non-cash consideration and gifts have their own valuation rules based on open market value or replacement cost.
