About this lesson

This lesson covers the recognition and measurement of wages, salaries, bonuses, compensated absences, and benefits in kind, showing you when to recognise expenses and liabilities based on whether obligations are legal, constructive, or conditional. Short-term employee benefits are recognised as an expense in the period when the employee renders service. The treatment depends on the type of benefit: wages and salaries are expensed on an accruals basis as earned, profit sharing and bonuses are recognised when a legal or constructive obligation exists and can be reliably measured, and compensated absences like holiday pay and sick leave are split into two categories. Accumulating absences (typically holiday pay) that can be carried forward are accrued for their expected cost when earned but not yet claimed. Non-accumulating absences (such as maternity leave) are expensed only when the absence actually occurs. Benefits in kind—such as medical insurance, life insurance, or company cars—are recognised the same way as cash benefits, measured at the cost to the employer of providing them. Understanding this distinction between accumulating and non-accumulating absences is essential for accurate financial statement preparation and will help you handle employee benefit provisions confidently in exam scenarios and professional practice.
