About this lesson

Financial information must meet two fundamental characteristics: relevance and faithful representation. Relevance means information helps users make decisions by having both predictive value (showing what might happen) and confirmatory value (confirming what has happened). It must focus on material issues—significant events that would actually influence decision-makers. Faithful representation, previously called reliability, means reflecting economic reality rather than just legal form, and requires information to be complete, unbiased, and free from error. Four enhancing characteristics support these fundamentals. Comparability means presenting information consistently year on year so users can compare results—any changes must be disclosed. Timeliness ensures information is available promptly, as it becomes less useful over time. Verifiability requires all figures to be supported by evidence and capable of confirmation. Understandability demands that information is presented as clearly and concisely as possible. Understanding these characteristics helps you recognise what makes financial statements reliable and decision-useful, a core concept tested across Financial Reporting, Financial Accounting, and Strategic Business Reporting papers.
