About this lesson
This video covers the three stages of audit planning—understanding the client, identifying risk areas, and responding with appropriate evidence—along with the three types of misstatement auditors encounter and how to distinguish between audit risk, business risk, and significant risk. The risk-based approach means auditors don't check everything equally. Instead, they spend more time and resources on higher-risk areas of the financial statements where misstatement is more likely. You'll explore what professional scepticism and professional judgement mean in practice, and why understanding your client's business, industry, internal controls, and external environment is the essential first step in planning any audit. Throughout this lesson, you'll see how the International Standards of Auditing (ISAs) require auditors to obtain sufficient appropriate evidence to reduce audit risk to an acceptably low level. You'll also learn to identify factual misstatements, judgemental misstatements, and projected misstatements—each requiring different audit responses. This foundation is critical for AA and other audit modules, where exam questions expect you to apply risk-based thinking to real client scenarios and justify your audit approach.
